I asked one of Britain’s Top Travel Agencies, Thomas Cook to give us the low-down on the important factors that tourists compare when choosing these as holiday destinations and why either islands are worthy to be on your bucket list.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<b>Costs</b><br />
<br />
It’s a near 3 hours extra flight time to the Islands as opposed to Madrid, Spain. They not only compared the cost of airfare to the <a href="http://book.flythomascook.com/cheap-flights/to-Tenerife-Canary-Islands/" target="_blank">Canary Islands</a> and flights to Madrid but also compared the price of accommodation, activities and overall cost of experience. The Canary Islands beat out Spain by a mile. The flights to Tenerife, accommodation at 3-star hotels and price of entertainment was far less than that of mainland Spain. Granted, there’s more to see on the mainland but what there is to see is quite pricey.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4D8Z4dF5ItQ/UymT9TJBvoI/AAAAAAAABeI/yXtaozcYvyg/s1600/Spain-compressed-4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4D8Z4dF5ItQ/UymT9TJBvoI/AAAAAAAABeI/yXtaozcYvyg/s1600/Spain-compressed-4.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Mainland Spain</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<b>Weather</b><br />
<br />
According to the online survey that Thomas Cook released, the Canary Islands were chosen as the spot for winter sun as it’s generally good weather all year round, and mainland Spain was chosen as a safer bet for the height of the summer season. The weather in the Canaries is somewhat dependant on the winds off the Sahara.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Breathtaking view, Canary Islands</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<b>Attractions</b><br />
<br />
It depends on what you plan on doing, if you just want to relax, an island vacation on one of the Canary Islands might be for you but Mainland Spain will win hands-down for the Tren de Sóller timber-panelled train, the Architecture of Toledo or the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_Maria_de_Montserrat_Abbey" target="_blank">Santa Maria de Montserrat Basilica</a>. Both destinations have their volcanic scenery, the mainland has Ilsa Graciosa and the Canaries have the volcanic coast, Los Hervideros where you can see Montanas del Fuego in the background. Both holiday destinations have the same ‘islandy’ activities like diving, yacht chartering, surfing, snorkelling, paddle-boarding, village-vibe and impassioned music.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Ocean view, Mainland Spain</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<b>Language</b><br />
<br />
Most passengers from the Spanish-speaking countries (like Cuba and Mexico) thought that they would have an edge on all other tourists visiting either the Canary Islands or mainland Spain. The islanders drop their ‘eses’ and don’t lisp the ‘th’ like in the mainland. When you travel to more rural parts of either territories, it can be quite frustrating for people who know they can speak Spanish but are not understanding the words that are coming out of local’s mouths and why an old lady keeps shouting “Lah mohcah!” (“The flies!” and you think she’s shouting “The coffee”/Las Mocha) It can get very confusing.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Biking in the Canary Islands</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<b>Food & Culture</b><br />
<br />
Both share a cultural compulsion with good food and wine. So you will not find either lacking in either department. The size is the biggest comparison, Madrid is huge and a bustling city whereas even in the most touristy areas, it’s still a quiet island. Both are a ‘touchy-feely’ culture but some parts of the islands, they are very-very-very-touchy-feely and stand right next to you. So if you are like me, and you like your space, leave your personal bubble at home.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Oz5fJ6kPS9M/UymVr2Ld6_I/AAAAAAAABeo/rBYBLmaetHw/s1600/spain3_2621039k.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Oz5fJ6kPS9M/UymVr2Ld6_I/AAAAAAAABeo/rBYBLmaetHw/s1600/spain3_2621039k.jpg" height="248" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">White sand beaches, Mainland Spain</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Surveys can be tricky, they give you facts and figures but don’t illustrate the feeling. Thomas Cook in cooperation with the passengers aboard the TFS flight hope their insights will help you decide on which of these magnificent and somewhat opposite poles of rich and vibrant Spanish regions, you might choose.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04560230864623101588noreply@blogger.com0Canary Islands, Spain28.2915637 -16.62913040000000824.721772700000002 -21.792704400000009 31.8613547 -11.465556400000008tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2755461055155628012.post-28130255564616261672013-09-25T11:33:00.000-04:002013-09-25T11:33:04.385-04:00The Moscow Mule<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The Moscow Mule Cocktail</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<b>The Moscow Mule</b> is a buck, or mule cocktail that became popular in the United States between the 1940s and the 1960s. Today, the delicious drink maintains a high degree of popularity based on its strong taste and retro appeal, and it is an important part of the standard litany of cocktails that any competent bartender should know. In addition, the Moscow Mule’s inception marks an interesting historical turning-point, as its sudden popularity paved the way for vodka to become the staple of American cocktails that it is today.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
In its original iteration and standard form today, the Moscow Mule is made up of one part lime juice, two parts vodka, and three parts ginger beer (although the amount of ginger beer sometimes ranges from two parts to four parts). The cocktail is typically served on the rocks, traditionally in a chilled copper cup but often in a highball glass; a lime wedge is the standard garnish to be found on the drink. The type of ginger beer used in the drink is usually a high-quality naturally brewed brand like Reed’s.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Key Ingredients</td></tr>

The Moscow Mule is sometimes alternatively known as the Vodka Buck, the Vodka Mule, or the Russian Mule. As with most cocktails, there are a few different popular variations of the Moscow Mule, with names altered mainly on the basis on the real or perceived origin of the liquor used in lieu of vodka. When <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J%C3%A4germeister" target="_blank">Jäegermeister</a> is used instead of vodka, the result is a Jäger Mule; Tequila creates a Mexican Mule; Irish whiskey a Dublin Donkey; bourbon a Kentucky Mule; dry gin a Mississippi Mule.<br />

<br />
Invented in 1941 by two major industry players—at the location of the famous Chatham Hotel in Manhattan, New York City no less—the cocktail rode into the United States well before vodka was a common American drink. At the time, vodka, known colloquially as “white whiskey,” was an exotic, little-known, and unpopular drink in the United States; ginger was the standard and most popular clear spirit for Americans before the Moscow Mule came around. Vodka producers trying to penetrate the American liquor market, however, hoped to find a vehicle for enhancing their product’s appeal.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
The idea for this drink was concocted by John G. Martin (a liquor and food distributor who worked with vodka producer Smirnoff, Co.) and Jack Morgan (a beer producer). Martin and Morgan hoped to find a way to broaden and enhance vodka’s appeal for American drinkers. According to legend, Martin and Morgan were sipping vodka with random chasers, combinations, and garnishes, when they happened upon the combination of the Russian spirit with ginger beer and a bit of lime. Having passed around the innovative combination to friends and colleagues, they found the drink to be a strong, delicious and seductive cocktail. Associating vodka with Russia, and observing the signature “mule-kick” of the ginger beer, the duo christened their creation the “Moscow Mule.”<br />

</tbody></table>
John Martin’s company, Smirnoff, used the new cocktail to spearhead a vodka marketing campaign across the nation. From its inception on the East Coast, the Moscow Mule quickly found its way west, where it became a hit in glamorous Hollywood and eventually went on to be a steady favorite in bars and clubs from Seattle to San Diego. A seismic shift in the liquor industry occurred as, over time, vodka replaced gin as the most popular clear spirit in the country. Before long—and much to the delight of Smirnoff, John G. Martin and Jack Morgan—the Moscow Mule helped to usher in a veritable vodka craze that stirred the nation in the 1940s and 50s and has assured vodka’s place as a staple American spirit.<br />

Many people with an affinity to a particular food or beverage become interested in its history and evolution, and cocktail aficionados are no exception. If your drink of choice is the Negroni and you’d like an attention-grabbing story to add to the repertoire of your happy hour chatter, you’re in luck! You’ll leave your bar mates impressed when you recount the tale of how the Negroni came to be.<br />

<b>Campari: The Beginning</b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Campari</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Those who know their drinks are familiar with the profound simplicity of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Negroni" target="_blank">Negroni</a> recipe – one part Campari, one part gin, one part vermouth. So the beginning of the Negroni really begins with the advent of Campari, the sweet Italian aperitif.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
In the 1860s, a young –only fourteen, in fact – bartender from Turin, Italy named Gaspare Campari began experimenting with creating his own liqueurs. One concoction composed of over 60 ingredients became his special project, and he worked on different combinations of fruits and spices to make it the perfect blend of sweet and tart. Once perfected, he began serving it to his customers and it quickly became popular. Twenty five years later, Mr. Campari had created a booming enterprise from the sale of the elixir that bore his name.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GZ7R627Oijs/UeA3bzS0PHI/AAAAAAAABMw/ziWs_cTbBLY/s1600/negroni_close_sq.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GZ7R627Oijs/UeA3bzS0PHI/AAAAAAAABMw/ziWs_cTbBLY/s320/negroni_close_sq.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Little could Mr. Campari have known that two generations later another Italian would use his creation to give rise to what would become one of their motherland’s most popular cocktails.<br />
<br />
<b>The Negroni Is Born</b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fkHdlCBX2uc/UeA37u7yeFI/AAAAAAAABM0/EFad2zmXnFw/s1600/negroni1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fkHdlCBX2uc/UeA37u7yeFI/AAAAAAAABM0/EFad2zmXnFw/s400/negroni1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
This history of the Negroni is somewhat less clear than that of Campari, but legend has it that one of Florence’s most notorious Lotharios, a count by the name of Camillo Negroni, requested that his bartender create a variation of his favorite cocktail, the Americano. This was the early twentieth century, a time of great political turmoil in Italy, especially Florence, so Count Negroni was looking for something with a little more bite.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JHdXEV122EA/UeA2Zri8OQI/AAAAAAAABMc/IMwjzu0-aPE/s1600/negroni+%25281%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JHdXEV122EA/UeA2Zri8OQI/AAAAAAAABMc/IMwjzu0-aPE/s320/negroni+%25281%2529.jpg" width="277" /></a></div>
<br />
In a moment of ingenuity, his server nixed the club soda that’s traditionally included in an Americano and added some gin to the glass. The count was impressed with the creation and it became his regular drink. Before long, other people were requesting the modified Americano as well. The Negroni was born, and it has been one of the most commonly imbibed cocktails in Italy ever since.<br />
<br />
<b>Modern Iterations</b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gqncXpYfUOY/UeA4Hw_uFXI/AAAAAAAABM8/YJx7OzIvfcU/s1600/have-you-ever-try-the-italian-aperitif-called-L-6AHDCW.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gqncXpYfUOY/UeA4Hw_uFXI/AAAAAAAABM8/YJx7OzIvfcU/s400/have-you-ever-try-the-italian-aperitif-called-L-6AHDCW.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The conventional Negroni is light, crisp, and slightly bitter, yet sweet enough to keep the mouth from puckering. These qualities make the unadulterated Negroni an international favorite, but the rise in of creative cuisine in recent years has bred a few spin-offs of the classic Negroni.<br />
<br />
One common variation uses vodka instead of gin and another also replaces the gin, but with sparkling wine. Many fashionable bars offer their own twist on the Negroni; for example, Fiola, a trendy Washington, D.C. hotspot, boasts a drink known as the Negroni d’Amore, which is a blend of Old Tom gin, Barolo Chinato (a dark wine), and Kina L'Avion D'Or (an aperitif).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Qr_F_WoPB5g/UeA4RbQ_MwI/AAAAAAAABNE/ymu2qP_JSm0/s1600/Campari-and-Negroni-199x300.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Qr_F_WoPB5g/UeA4RbQ_MwI/AAAAAAAABNE/ymu2qP_JSm0/s320/Campari-and-Negroni-199x300.jpg" width="212" /></a></div>
<br />
However, many cocktail purists insist that no facsimile, regardless of how delicious, can serve as a stand-in for the time-honored, traditional Negroni. Given its rich flavor and history, it’s understandable that the cocktail has persisted in popularity over so many decades, and will surely enjoy a place on our drink menus for years to come. To the Negroni: long may it reign!<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Cruise Ship Cuisine</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Increasing numbers of people are choosing to travel and spend their vacations on board cruise ships. In fact over the past ten years the cruise industry has increased its passenger numbers by 7.6% a year. The industry has finally managed to shake off its reputation as a holiday choice for older generations with food being limited to formal and stuffy dining rooms.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

</tbody></table>
The cruise ships now offer a great range of dining options with choices spanning from casual BBQs to the original formal dining areas meaning that they cater for all tastes. The dining is also more flexible now and passengers can choose where and when they want to eat, with ‘anytime dining’ becoming the new buzz word. The quality of the food has also improved vastly and many ships now offer specialty restaurants for guests to choose from. However, these restaurants generally incur a cover charge, which is usually about £12 (around $18) per person.<br />
<br />
<b>Sample the food as you go</b><br />
<br />
If you enjoy food and exploring the different types of cuisines as you travel, then why not try eating ashore some days while on your cruise. Sampling freshly produced local food can give you a real insight to the culture of an area, as well as enabling you to interact with local people. In fact food tourism is a growing sector. A cruise can offer you the perfect way to sample a range of different cultures and cuisines within one vacation.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sSKzjswzpwM/UWwXk0qy7ZI/AAAAAAAABJg/Tqg9AioArYc/s1600/cn_image.size.sushi-lollipops-qsine-celebrity-cruises.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sSKzjswzpwM/UWwXk0qy7ZI/AAAAAAAABJg/Tqg9AioArYc/s400/cn_image.size.sushi-lollipops-qsine-celebrity-cruises.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
This is especially true of a Mediterranean cruise as you will visit a range of different countries with their unique cultures and cuisines. On a ten-day cruise you could manage to sample authentic local food from eight different countries. Not many other holiday types can offer that! One day you could be eating Moussaka in Greece, and the next day trying a meze in Turkey. Sampling the food of a country is the best way to get to the heart of their culture.<br />
<br />
Here is a look at some of the Mediterranean’s delicious cuisines that you could sample while on your cruise.<br />
<br />
<b>Greek gastronomy</b><br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fhtjpXu0uAA/UWwVgGaVTdI/AAAAAAAABJA/hWbwtZ8MUI0/s1600/grilled-hallumi-cheese-610x300.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="196" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fhtjpXu0uAA/UWwVgGaVTdI/AAAAAAAABJA/hWbwtZ8MUI0/s400/grilled-hallumi-cheese-610x300.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Greek Saganaki</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Greek food has evolved throughout history absorbing influences from Turkey, the Balkans and the Middle East. Contemporary Greek food uses olive oil, vegetables and herbs, fish, meat, honey, yogurt, cheese, aubergine and courgette. Greek food uses flavors more dominantly than many other Mediterranean cuisines. The use of oregano, mint, garlic, onion, dill and bay leaves are commonplace. The climate and terrain of Greece means that goats and sheep are bred more often than cattle, so beef is not often found on menus. Eating out is very popular in Greece with locals and tourists alike so you won’t have any difficulty in finding a great restaurant to stop at. Typical dishes include, Saganaki, Tzatziki, Taramosalata, Greek salad, Gyros, Moussaka, Pastitsio, and Souvlaki.<br />
<br />
<b>Italian treats</b><br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bemduYGfyQA/UWwVrILr14I/AAAAAAAABJI/b-WT-mb0FzM/s1600/1208858576-fegato-veneziana.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="306" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bemduYGfyQA/UWwVrILr14I/AAAAAAAABJI/b-WT-mb0FzM/s400/1208858576-fegato-veneziana.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Italian fregato alla veneziana</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Most of us are familiar with Italian food already as it is widely accepted as one of the most popular cuisines in the world. However, authentic Italian food eaten in Italy is in a different league to what you will have tried back at home. One of the main characteristics of Italian food is its simplicity. Many dishes have only a handful of ingredients with Italian chefs emphasizing the importance of the quality of ingredients as opposed to elaborate preparation. Cheese, pasta and wine are key elements to Italian cuisine and many of them are household names throughout the world, such as mozzarella, spaghetti, mascarpone, tagliatelle, Chianti and Montalcino. Why not try some new dishes while in Italy as opposed to sticking to the world famous ones? Look out for Fritto Misto (pasta with wild boar sauce), fregato alla veneziana (liver and onions), fiori fritti (deep fried courgette) and risotto alle seppie (cuttlefish risotto).<br />
<br />
<b>Croatian platters</b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LmyjKD0XbMM/UWwbEAgkSpI/AAAAAAAABJ0/OHAucmG81T4/s1600/sporki-makaruli-croatia+(2).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="232" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LmyjKD0XbMM/UWwbEAgkSpI/AAAAAAAABJ0/OHAucmG81T4/s400/sporki-makaruli-croatia+(2).jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Sporki Makaruli - Croatia </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Croatian food draws upon a variety of European influences resulting in a great mix of dishes. The influence varies depending where in Croatia you are. However the over-riding power over the Croatian cuisine is the sea. The Adriatic Sea provides the country with a rich diversity of fresh fish, shellfish, squid and lobster. You can expect that the majority of the menus you will peruse in Croatia will be dominated by seafood. However, there is much more to Croatian food than just fish. The lamb produced in the country is known to have an especially tender taste due to the aromatic herbs that make up their diet. Homemade pasta with a goulash type sauce is a staple food that has long been known as peasant dish but is making a popular comeback in restaurants. Dubrovnik is famous for sporki makaruli which is a meaty goulash served with homemade macaroni and dusted with grated hard cheese.<br />
<br />
<b>French delights</b><br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-aYo46REaRv0/UWwWKLdDxuI/AAAAAAAABJY/OiWYqvfllpg/s1600/bouillabaisse.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="265" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-aYo46REaRv0/UWwWKLdDxuI/AAAAAAAABJY/OiWYqvfllpg/s400/bouillabaisse.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Bouillabaisse</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
French food is another world-famous cuisine that most people have sampled at some stage in their life whether it be a baguette at lunch, a slice of brie on a cheese platter, or champagne during a celebration. France is well-known for its high quality food, and the fact that the term ‘haute cuisine’ originates there speaks volumes! Dishes that are traditional to the Mediterranean coast of France include Ratatouille, Nicoise salad, Bouillabaisse and Tapenade.<br />
<br />
<b>An authentic experience</b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
By making the effort to get out and try the local cuisines of the countries that you visit you will gain a more authentic experience of their individual cultures and the fascinating people within them. You may also find that you return home with a greater appreciation of what can be done with food and might want to try recreating the dishes! I know I do!<br />

Recently, casino towns have begun to notice a significant increase in tourist traffic, another sign that the economy in the United States is on the mend. While gambling and entertainment are naturally draws to these areas, world-class restaurants are another perk to localities such as LA, Vegas, and others. In fact, if you are a steak lover (like most North Americans) you can find some some of the best places in these cities to enjoy a mouthwatering steak after raising the stakes at the casinos.</div>

Whether you go to Los Angeles to play poker, to check out Hollywood and Beverly Hills, or to have some fun and sun on the beach at some point you need to make your way over to Mastro's Steakhouse over in Beverly Hills. It is consistently ranked as one of the top 10 steakhouses in the country and serves some of the best steak on the west coast.They offer "first-class" offerings on both steaks and sides and their service is top rate. As with all things Beverly Hills, be prepared to pay for quality.<br />

It goes almost without saying that the two main reasons people visit Las Vegas are for gambling and entertainment. However, the city has also developed quite the reputation for food. For those wanting a steakhouse with the <a href="http://www.pokerlistings.com/blog/raising-the-steaks-a-poker-players-guide-to-good-eating-in-new-orleans" target="_blank">varied tastes of New Orleans</a>, without having to travel across the country, try Delmonico's at the Venetian. Emeril Legasse's New Orleans-inspired restaurant has numerous choices of top-shelf steak as well as New Orleans specialties like N'awlins gumbo, killer crab cakes, and more.<br />

The original opened in Manhattan but this one retains many of the original elements including dark cherry hardwood floors and walls and leather booths. This restaurant serves prime cuts of Gallagher's aged sirloin, some of the best in AC. If you're watching your figure, you can also enjoy lighter fare, including excellent salads and Kobe beef burgers.<br />

The Barbados Food & Wine and Rum Festival is an exciting 4 days in tropical paradise featuring top chefs, sommeliers and mixologists from Barbados and around the world. It truly is an event not to be missed! Now in it's third year the festival has grown in popularity, and even added a new event. Sizzle Street is the newest addition to the festival, which sought to emphasize one of the biggest food trends around the world today - Street food.<br />

The event was held in Queen's Park, located in the capital city of Bridgetown. The Queen's Park playing field was transformed into a veritable foodie mecca, featuring some of Barbados' Top Street Food chefs and vendors like Cuz Fish Shack, Cou Cou Village, Lee's Bistro & Catering Services, and Chef Paul Norville of The Smoke Pit. Patrons were truly in for a treat as the food on offer included local, regional and international street food favorites like Fish Cakes (made with salted cod fish and some with breadfruit too!), Fish Cutters, Conkies, Pudding and Souse, BBQ Pig Tails, Ribs & Chicken, Fried Chicken, Hot dogs, Burgers, Macaroni Pie, Fried and Grilled Fish, Pulled Pork, Bacon Cakes, Pork Kebabs, Rotis, Cupcakes, Ice cream ... and the list goes on! My favorites at this event included the Blue Marlin Fish Cutter from Cuz Fish Shack (and I am not a fan of Blue Marlin fish but theirs was good!), Fish cakes, BBQ Chicken, and Pudding & Souse. The highlight of the event for me though was the Eggonomics cooking & mixology demo with aspiring chef Rico Bradshaw (just 19 yrs old!) and Barbadian mixologist, Dameain Williams (from In Da Mix). First up was the cooking demo and I was up front and center, so to speak, as Chef Rico demonstrated how to make Bacon cakes, and Pork Kebabs with Mango Rum Sauce - Delish!! Ingredients for the bacon cakes included sauteed onions, bacon of course, flour, water, thyme and coconut panko crumbs... like I said, delish!<br />

If you don't already know, Mount Gay Rum is the rum that invented rum! So pretty much any cocktail made with this fine spirit is not only packed with flavor but tons of history as well. The cocktail for this demo was a new creation. The Mixologist toyed with the name SorBas - so that's what I'll run with. Ingredients included Mount Gay Eclipse Rum Original, Lime Juice, Sorrel Juice, Basil Leaves, Simple Syrup, Angostura Bitters and Ice. It was awesome! A well balanced cocktail.<br />

Apart from the food and rum and other beverages on offer, Sizzle Street also featured live entertainment, healthy lifestyle checks, jumping tents for the kids and giveaways. All in all it was a fun outdoor event that would be perfect for the entire family and I think it's a great addition to the Barbados Food & Wine and Rum Festival. There's a song I dance to at Zumba class (yes I'm a Zumba-holic) with words that go something like this: "Zumba.. Brazil.. caipirinha.. baila..." (video below). I think those words sum up the feeling you get when you drink a Caipirinha - the national cocktail of Brazil. Yes you will want to dance and forget all your worries!<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
The Brazilian Caipirinha cocktail is a very simple one to make with only 3 ingredients, but when it's done right it's not only delicious but packs a real punch! The spirit of choice for this cocktail is Cachaça (sugar cane rum), which is Brazil's most common distilled spirit. The popularity of this drink outside of Brazil, has grown over the years due in part to the availability of premium Cachaça outside of Brazil. So next time you feel stressed or you just want to dance, have a Caipirinha and baila!<br />
<br />
<b>Caipirinha Cocktail Recipe</b><br />
<i>Ingredients</i><br />
8 lime slices<br />
2 tsp of granulated sugar (or to taste)<br />
2.5 oz of premium Cachaça (try Leblon)<br />
ice cubes<br />
<br />
<i>Method</i><br />
Sprinkle the lime slices with the sugar and place into a glass. Use a pestle to crush the pulp side of the lime slices to release some of the juice. Pour the Cachaça into the glass and stir. Then add the ice cubes and stir again. Enjoy!<br />

Every day, millions of people ponder where they'll run off to in order to escape their daily, mundane routine. Dreams of a different pace of life, new and interesting cuisine and an overall exciting atmosphere may begin to envelope their minds. Images of beautiful, exotic scenery and a change from the average day may continuously circulate and become overwhelming, consuming their thoughts throughout the day. If this sounds like you and you're seeking to satisfy these overwhelming desires, Rio De Janeiro is a wonderful place to start.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
Rio De Janeiro, simply referred to as Rio by locals, is located in South America and is the former capital of Brazil. This frequently visited city is famous for its tropical climate, crystal clear blue seas, historic architecture, elaborate cultural festivities, popular beaches and much more. With all that Rio De Janeiro has to offer culturally and geographically, it's definitely the right spot to lose yourself (in a good way!).<br />
<br />
<b>The People</b><br />
<br />
Brazil represents a true melting pot of cultures, with a fusion of Portuguese settlers, African descendants, Caribbean people and native Brazilians. This gives way to a unique culture that is truly vibrant. Brazilians by nature are very friendly people. They will have no qualms about inviting you for a drink or even to share a meal.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Brazilian people are warm and friendly</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
One thing you will learn quickly about Brazilians is their love of music and dance - no surprise here since they are so well known for their love of partying and just having a good time. Brazilians will wholeheartedly throw themselves into the party, and focus on the moment. The pace of life is slow and laid back, and Brazilians are proud of this. After all, you can't really enjoy the moment if you're in a hurry right?! So if you're uptight and high strung, a visit to Brazil will definitely cure that!<br />
<br />
<b>The Food</b><br />
<br />
Rio De Janeiro is a beloved spot due to its interesting dishes, snacks and beverages. Much of cuisine of this vibrant city is influenced by it's unique fusion of cultures. The food is delicious, simple and generally quite healthy. Brazilians understand that good food and drink play an important part in truly having a good time! Some favorites include:<br />

<br />
<b>The Drinks</b><br />
<br />
Acai rich beverages are incredibly common in Rio and are highly praised for all the nutrients and antioxidants provided. Having a drink consisting of Acai pulp simply combined with fruit or Guarana is a popular snack. Another prominent drink in Rio De Janeiro is Guarana juice. Guarana is a dried paste produced from the seeds of Amazon plants and is used in many Brazilian drinks. You will typically find juice bars on every corner selling an array of fruit juices like Guava, Papaya, Mango, Sweetsop and Acerola in addition to Acai and Guarana juice.<br />

Though both Peru and Chile lay claim to the Pisco Sour cocktail as their official cocktail, the drink actually originated in Lima, Peru during the early 1900s. It is so popular in Peru that the first Saturday of February is designated as "Pisco Sour Day"!<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
The Peruvian Pisco Sour is made with Peruvian Pisco (aromatic brandy made from grapes) and includes ingredients such as Angostura bitters, egg white, syrup and lime juice.<br />
<br />
Today the Pisco Sour has gained many fans around the world, and rightly so. Whether you choose to <a href="http://buff.ly/S0w6ce" target="_blank">travel to Peru</a>, or mix one up at home, the Peruvian Pisco Sour is a great drink to welcome the weekend! Cheers!<br />
<br />
<b>Peruvian Pisco Sour Recipe</b><br />
<i>Ingredients:</i><br />
<br />
2 ounces Peruvian Pisco<br />
¾ ounce simple syrup<br />
1 ounce fresh lime juice<br />
1 egg white<br />
Dash or two of Angostura bitters<br />
<br />
<i>Method:</i><br />
<br />
Combine all ingredients except bitters in a cocktail shaker. Shake vigorously until the egg white is foamy (a few seconds). Add ice to the shaker and then shake vigorously again until chilled. Strain into a cocktail glass. Add a few dashes of Angostura Bitters on top. Enjoy!<br />

Once dinner has been served and savored, the show begins with a calypso tribute to Barbados in an exciting segment called “Proud to be a Bajan”. The rest of the show is packed with a rich cultural and historical experience including a wide range of tributes. The show pays tribute to Africa, to select Caribbean Islands, and to our born and raised Barbadian pop star Rihanna. Fire eating, stilt walking, limbo dancing, and the sweet serenades of Mr. Philip Seven complement the night’s proceedings along with an exhilarating, audience-interactive component called ‘make noise’ with the ever energetic Didi.<br />

Are you an adrenaline junkie, are you adventurous, are you interested in doing a tour or activity that is different to those that you may have done in the past? Then why not try zipping on a cable line? Aerial Trek Zipline is the only tour of its kind in Barbados and is unique to only a few Caribbean islands. With a total course length of over 1000 feet and the highest platform being approximately 125 feet above the ground Aerial Trek sets the stage for an hour’s worth of exhilarating excitement!<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">High above Jack in The Box Gully, Aerial Trek</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I have to say that my experience on Aerial trek was not quite as scary or death defying as I thought it would be. It was merely the anticipation of zipping on the line and the possibility of getting stuck that provided the adrenaline rush. The actual zipping was quite mild but that was my experience mainly because I didn’t have any complications. From the perspective of my colleagues that got stuck on 2 of the longer lines however, they may beg to differ.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Getting ready to zip!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
On that note, I’d like to encourage anyone doing this tour for the first time to go with a group of your craziest, most adventurous friends. For me, my company made the tour that much more entertaining. Knowing that my best friend from toddler years would be at the other end waiting to see if I would get stuck on the line, brought out the competitive edge that I needed to execute my zips without a hitch. I knew that if I got stuck she would never let me live it down.<br />

I must also highly commend the Aerial Trek staff for their expertise and professionalism. The tour <span style="background-color: white;">guides are seasoned and highly trained and there wasn't a mishap that occurred that they didn't </span><span style="background-color: white;">effectively deal with. Not only are they trained on how to counteract any technical problems; their people skills also came to the fore as they somehow managed to keep the patrons calm with their relaxing vibe and mannerisms.</span><br />

I don’t know if I would ever venture to complete Aerial Trek’s zipline adventure again but I will say this; if you’ve got the stomach for it you should try it at least once. Getting to go on this tour with my best friends and enjoy the outdoors with them at that level was one of the best activities that I’ve ever done. It has provided us with an adventure that we will be speaking about for years to come.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Maui Beach</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
A Maui vacation should encompass far more than sitting on the beach and soaking up the sun (although I was tempted to the minute I landed!). Maui has some of the most unique foods, drinks and activities in the world. So my advice to you is this, don't break out the lounge chair and sunblock until you've tried everything Maui has to offer.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<b>What (And Where) to Eat</b><br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Oi4So0X0ApM/T81qnHqa3dI/AAAAAAAAA0g/AsHk9o97wUM/s1600/spam-musubi.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Oi4So0X0ApM/T81qnHqa3dI/AAAAAAAAA0g/AsHk9o97wUM/s400/spam-musubi.jpg" height="298" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Spam Musubi (Photo credit: blogs.houstonpress.com)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<b>Spam Musubi</b><br />
This delicacy can be found at food carts, mini-marts and golf courses all over Maui. Wrapped in plastic and priced to sell, Spam Musubi is a piece of fried luncheon meat served with rice and wrapped in seaweed. Sushi for the masses!<br />
<br />
<b>Shave Ice</b><br />
This is not your typical Snow Cone! True Hawaiian shave ice has the texture of newly fallen snow and is flavored with homemade syrups in a huge variety of flavors. Forget the sickeningly sweet concoctions of ice chunks served on the mainland; shave ice will ruin Snow Cones for you forever.<br />
<br />
<b>Lava Flow</b><br />
This popular Maui cocktail packs a real punch! Made with light rum and Malibu as well as fresh fruits and juices, this libation is as fun to look at as it is to drink. Sold at restaurants and bars all over the island, this drink should not be missed.<br />
<br />
<b>Saimin</b><br />
Did you drink a few too many Lava Flows last night? Locals will recommend a healthy dose of Saimin. This noodle soup has an amazing reputation as a hangover cure. Heaped with fish, meat, peppers and green onions, Saimin will cure what ails you!<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Ahi Rainbow Tower, Mai Tai Lounge (Photo credit: WhatsCookingMaui)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<b>Mai Tai Lounge</b><br />
A trip to Maui would not be complete without a Mai Tai. Get it at the famous Mai Tai Lounge. Offering the only rooftop dining experience in Maui, Mai Tai Lounge offers a full menu in addition to stunning cocktails. Try the Ahi Rainbow Tower, a true feast for the eyes as well as the taste buds.<br />
<br />
<b>Hula Grill</b><br />
Locals and tourists alike flock to the Hula Grill for a huge slice of flourless chocolate cake. You could go for dessert alone but you'd be missing what might be the best dinner on all of Maui. The crabcakes alone are worth the trip.<br />
<br />
<b>Gerard's</b><br />
Gerard's offers great French food served under fairy lights on the outdoor lanai. The oyster mushrooms served in puff pastry shells offer a taste of the sea while the rack of lamb is simply amazing.<br />
<br />
<b>Haliimaile General Store</b><br />
Dine in rustic beauty at a true don't-miss Maui restaurant. The menu, brainchild of chef Bev Gannon, is American eclectic meets Hawaiian traditional. Sometimes surprising and always delicious, Haliimaile General Store is a local favorite.<br />
<br />
<b>Things to See and Do</b><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Submerged Volcano Crater, Molokini (Photo credit: MauiGuideBook.com)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<b>Dive in a Submerged Volcano</b><br />
A popular dive site off Molokini provides a great view of life beneath the sea. The walls of the submerged volcano create a living aquarium. Don't pay the extra baggage fees to bring your own equipment; rental gear is available at dozens of dive shops all over Maui.<br />
<br />
<b>Glass Bottom Boat Excursions</b><br />
A glass bottom boat provides a great alternative to diving for those who don't want to get wet. Departing from locations all over the island, these excursions typically last from one to four hours.<br />
<br />
<b>See the Sun Rise From an Active Volcano</b><br />
Book a tour, set the alarm and make sure the camera has plenty of extra batteries. Watching the sun rise over Haleakala is a true once in a lifetime experience. Be sure to turn off your camera flash once the sun begins to rise; flash pictures won't turn out.<br />
<br />
<b>Get an Adrenalin Rush</b><br />
Zipline through a historic ranch! Phiiolo Ranch offers the longest zipline track in Hawaii. Catch great bi-coastal views of the Pacific on your way down the course.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Maui Luau</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<b>Go With the Flow</b><br />
Make time for a nature hike. Visitors to La Perouse can hike along Hawaii's most recent lava flow.<br />
<br />
<b>Take a Ride</b><br />
Horses can be rented at many of Maui's ranches. Take a ride on the beach or through the beautiful forests and plantations.<br />
<br />
<b>Have an "Alien" Experience</b><br />
Try UFO parasailing over the ocean. Your UFO shaped parasail will look like an extraterrestrial craft to those watching from the beach.<br />
<br />
<b>Attend a Luau</b><br />
This is practically a requirement in Maui. The Feast at Lele is a favorite of many tourists. Try the Lomi lomi Salmon. Skip the Poi.<br />
<br />
<b>Places to Shop</b><br />

<b>Score a Great Deal</b><br />
The Maui Swap Meet takes place every Saturday. From shark teeth to valuable art, you never know what you'll find.<br />
<br />
<b>Mall Experience</b><br />
Queen Kaahumanu Center is Maui's biggest mall consisting over over 100 specialty shops, galleries and restaurants.<br />
<br />
<b>Go Wild (West, that is)</b><br />
Makawao is an old cowboy town filled with unique boutiques. More touristy than practical, a visit to Makawao is a fun way to spend an afternoon.<br />
<br />
<b>Shop Like the Locals</b><br />
There are numerous open air markets in Maui catering to tourists and locals alike. Usually populated with handmade goods and local art, these markets are a great place to get a deal. Most merchants are more than happy to haggle prices.<br />

After experiencing the <a href="http://foodandtravelwithdes.blogspot.com/2012/04/party-with-pirates-barbados-black-pearl.html" target="_blank">Barbados Black Pearl Jolly Roger 1 Lunch Cruise</a>, I couldn’t help but wonder how this highly
acclaimed party cruise would entertain its guests at night without the water
activity favorites like rope swinging, walking the plank and swimming with the
turtles. So I arranged for my business
associates and myself to experience the special sunset cruise held only one
night each week, on Thursdays. I did not know what to expect but I looked
forward to it with great anticipation.
Since I’ve already reviewed the day/lunch cruise, this review will
simply complete my review of the Black Pearl Party Cruises in general.<br />

<span style="line-height: 14px;">When I lived in California, my friends and I would constantly be on the road going here, there and everywhere. Apart from the music and long conversations, the food made the trip something I actually looked forward to. With Memorial day and summer fast approaching, families all over the country are preparing to vacation at the destination of their choice. This year, millions of Americans will hit the road and enjoy this great country, whether on their own or with their families.</span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: #404040; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: small; margin-bottom: 12pt;">
<span style="line-height: 14px;">While checking your automobile's travel condition is very important, an often overlooked aspect of road trips, is the food that you can eat while on the drive! Stopping at restaurants to buy from their value menus can still turn out to be expensive, and the foods that you will end up eating might not be the best for your body. The next time you go on your road trip, consider these classic foods for you to munch on. Not only will they make you feel better, but you will be saving yourself a good chunk of change that you can then spend on your destination. Before you go, remember that you might need a cooler with ice to keep things cold and maybe a thermos to keep things warm. This will increase the diversity of foods that you can take on your trip, and you are less likely to get tired of it and head to one of those value menu places.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: #404040; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: small; margin-bottom: 12pt;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: #404040; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: small; margin-bottom: 12pt;">
<span style="line-height: 14px;">Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Just because you are on the road doesn't mean that you have to eat unsatisfying meals or survive on granola bars (tough they are a great road trip food). The following are some foods that you should take on your road trip in order for you to get some healthy calories in you to get you started on your drive and keep you energized throughout the day.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: #404040; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: small; margin-bottom: 12pt;">
<span style="line-height: 14px;">Fresh fruit is extremely important, as it is a source of natural sugars, vitamins and minerals. Also, there are no empty calories and unhealthy fats. Good breakfast fruits you should take include bananas, apples and oranges. Make sure to keep these in a cooler for maximum freshness.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: #404040; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: small; margin-bottom: 12pt;">
<span style="line-height: 14px;">Another food you need to take is cereal. Cereal is a mainstay in breakfast today, and since they sell cereals in individual portions now, it will be easy for you to pack them and take them on your trip. Make sure to take milk for you to have with the cereal if you like it that way. Combine it with your fruit for extra goodness.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: #404040; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: small; margin-bottom: 12pt;">
<span style="line-height: 14px;">You always have to have carbs, that is why you should take some type of muffin or bagel to munch on for breakfast. Couple your carbs with some butter or cream cheese and you'll forget all about fast food. Along with carbs, you might also crave some type of protein. A perfect protein source would be the smoked sausages that are pre-cooked. With all of these components, you will be ready to have a good, filling breakfast.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: #404040; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: small; margin-bottom: 12pt;">
<span style="line-height: 14px;">To wash it all down, consider taking natural apple or orange juice. Also, don't forget about water. It's as natural and healthy as you can get. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: #404040; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: small; margin-bottom: 12pt;">
<span style="line-height: 14px;"><b>Lunch and Dinner</b></span></div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Sandwiches Make the Perfect Road Trip Food!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: #404040; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: small; margin-bottom: 12pt;">
<span style="line-height: 14px;">People are always looking forward to lunch and dinner. At work, it is a break from your daily stresses, and on the road, it will be a break from driving hundreds of miles. Hopefully you can find a nice little rest area, and after you stretch your muscles out, you'll be ready to feast on these foods that are perfect for lunch or dinner.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: #404040; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: small; margin-bottom: 12pt;">
<span style="line-height: 14px;">Sandwiches are the ultimate road trip food, as you can have many food groups nestled nicely between two pieces of bread. The variations here are almost endless. You can have white bread, wheat bread, or any other type of bread you can imagine. As for what goes inside, there are also endless possibilities, such as deli meats, peanut butter and jelly, or any other types of meat and veggie combinations that you can imagine. Remember to take condiments, such as mayo and mustard, to give your sandwiches an extra kick.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: #404040; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: small; margin-bottom: 12pt;">
<span style="line-height: 14px;">Other foods that you can take include potato salad (kept in the cooler) and veggies such as celery sticks, carrots and lettuce. The celery and carrots can be eaten as a snack, while you can use the lettuce in your sandwiches for a good crunch. Hot dogs are also extremely simple to prepare on the road and very satisfying to eat, given that you keep them in a thermos and let them cook in boiling water.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: #404040; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: small; margin-bottom: 12pt;">
<span style="line-height: 14px;">To drink, soda is a great break from water, just as long as you don't drink four cans in one sitting. Also, you can pack other refreshing drinks like lemonade or some iced tea.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: #404040; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: small; margin-bottom: 12pt;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: #404040; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: small; margin-bottom: 12pt;">
<span style="line-height: 14px;">Snacks are also very important, as they are a little pick me up and get you through your next meal. Aside from the veggies, you can also take some chips, chocolate, crackers, and cheese.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: #404040; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: small; margin-bottom: 12pt;">
<span style="line-height: 14px;">With a little planning, you can be sure that you will have a spectacular road trip with many goodies to eat and keep you well fed, content, and energized. (And keep more money in your pocket for the fun activities!)</span></div>

Ahoy mateys! For those of you that are looking to merge your party animal with your adventurous impulses while in Barbados, look no further, because the Black Pearl Jolly Roger 1 will do just that. The Jolly Roger is known as the ultimate pirate party cruise on the island and from the moment you set foot on the boat the pulsating music will be so resounding you won’t be able to resist shaking some part of your body. And if at first, you can somehow resist, once you take a sip of their potent self-serve Rum punch (50% alcohol content), chances are you’ll be shaking every part of your body!<br />

I went on the party cruise one day before my 30th birthday so maybe feelings of nostalgia permeated my experience somewhat, but my company thoroughly enjoyed themselves. My review of this activity is therefore primarily based upon observing my 4 year old daughter and cousin, <a href="https://plus.google.com/u/0/113691816878145259868/about">Desiree (FoodTravelDiva)</a>, who has also just turned 30, having the time of their lives. <br />

If you are prone to get sea sick then you need to be cautious when on the Jolly Roger. Though bigger than the average catamaran, the Jolly Roger’s small frame still rocks and sways a lot especially when travelling at high speeds. Once the 3 of us boarded we explored the bottom deck where the restrooms are and after returning to the main floor, I hesitantly ventured up to the top deck upon my party’s insistence.<br />

If you intend to go on the Jolly Roger to have a good dance workout then the top deck is where you need to be. All the party enthusiasts go on the top deck for the sun, the breeze and the room to dance and gyrate to their heart’s desire. When we got there, less than half hour into the trip, the party had already begun with a group of people ‘wukking up’ to the rhythms.<br />

When the cruise docked for lunch on the West Coast of the island, it was time for the patrons to indulge their adventurous side; walking the plank and rope swinging into the beautiful, crystal clear water. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to participate in one of the key features of the cruise which is swimming with the turtles. As nature would have it the turtles weren’t cooperative and the captain apologised for the omitted attraction.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Off she goes!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I suited up my daughter with the life vest provided for us by the crew and she was assisted into the water by a kind gentleman tourist. At first my daughter was a bit scared when she got in but she courageously weathered the movement of the waves asserting to Desiree and the lifeguard that she was okay and preferred to stay in the water. She was much braver than some adults (including myself), even receiving a token koala bear key chain for her bravery from the Australian visitor that helped her into the sea. <br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Thumbs up or foot up? My daughter and the Life Guard on duty!</td></tr>

Watching the tourists walk the plank was probably just as much fun as actually participating. They all got big thrills cannon balling, diving and belly flopping into the Caribbean Sea water. During the anchored period, it was also time to savour the scrumptious meal that is, in part, cooked on deck. If you order the steak or the tuna fish, you won’t regret it as you watch and smell the aroma during the preparation of those choices.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Steak grilled just the way you want it on board!</td></tr>

We all enjoyed the food, even though my daughter would have much preferred to go back into the sea. The menu buffet of macaroni and cheese pie, vegetable rice, steamed vegetables, tossed salad, coleslaw, garlic bread and a choice of chicken, steak or fish almost made me forget that I was on a boat. (<a href="https://twitter.com/#!/FoodTravelDiva">FoodTravelDiva</a> recommends that you choose the steak – it was tender, juicy and bursting with flavor!). The only thing that could have made dining more pleasurable was a table to sit at and fully relish my meal.<br />

After everyone had eaten, and the more adventurous people had their fill of swinging off the rope, it was time to head back and really party on the return journey. The proceedings were kicked off with a traditional pirate wedding and two cooperative sports indulged the crewmen all in the name of great entertainment. The couple’s Hispanic language barrier also added to the hilarity as we all looked on and laughed in good fun. Next, it was congaline time followed by a frenzy of dances lead by the crewmen to popular Bajan Soca songs like “follow the leader” and “cent, five cent, ten cent dollar”. Desiree, who is really into her Zumba, seemed to gain energy with each adrenaline pumped song change. I don’t recall ever seeing her have that much fun!<br />

The music selection didn’t lack for variety either, as the DJ also played today’s popular contemporary hits like Maroon 5’s Moves like Jagger and LMFAO’s I’m Sexy and I know it. To cap the day’s festivities, the finale ended on a high for me as I was called to the main deck’s bar to celebrate my birthday with a cake platter given to me by the Jolly Roger crew. It truly was a great day’s event and an exciting eve to my milestone. So my final review of the Pirate Party Cruise is this: If you want to have loads of fun and you’ve got the stomach for it you should definitely get onboard the Jolly Roger!<br />

After my cousin told me that she was going to go to the Sandy Lane Gold Cup with her daughter, I decided to go along for the experience since I had never had the privilege of going before. I wanted to embrace the whole experience, betting and all, but having arrived just in time to see the parade, I didn’t get a chance to place a bet.<br />

The Garrison Savannah was electrifying. It was packed to capacity with all kinds of people, dressed in all types of fashions. It was pretty funny to observe because some people seemed to be in competition with the costumed performers in the parade. The parade itself was low-key but tasteful. The performers did a great job keeping their audience’s attention; providing an hour’s worth of fun, clean entertainment. However, the parade was just the appetizer and the entree was now minutes away from being served.</div>

Even the gloomy weather couldn’t put a damper on the much awaited finale as the people all gathered into decent viewing position for the grand finale Sandy Lane Gold Cup race. Although I didn’t get a chance to bet on a horse, I was determined not to be outdone by the betters in the cheering so I chose a horse based on my favorite color red and since it also happened to share my brother’s name I figured, Dancin' David was a sure win. My cousin picked based on the name, so her favorite to win was ‘show me the money’.</div>

There were low murmurs as the horses entered the gates and just before the start, for a brief moment, it seemed like the earth stood still because everyone went silent. Then in the twinkling of an eye a shot rang through the air and the horses were off! Everyone rose to their feet as the horses went past the finish post the first time and then as they were nearing the final finish to see which one would be crowned victor, the noises swelled. People were now hollering for their favored horse in a frantic frenzy.</div>

I can’t recall the last time I screamed like that. It was a very exhilarating feeling and the only thing that would have made it more enjoyable was if I had actually bet. Perhaps the most regarded of Vodkas in the world, ABSOLUT Vodka is produced in a tiny village in Southern Sweden named, Ahus. With a history that dates back over 400 years, I'm sure you've had at least a drink or two in your lifetime in which this vodka was a key ingredient.<br />
<a name='more'></a> If not here's your chance to indulge. I was introduced to this week's cocktail at the 2011 Barbados Food, Wine and Rum festival which is a 4 day annual event held in the month of November. Cheers to you and the weekend!<br />

The event was well attended, and I must say the food was every bit as tantalizing as it looked. Call me a piglet, but there is something so rewarding about learning the culture of a country through my taste buds. In Australia, because the population is made up of such a melting pot of cultures and ethnicities, they have an incredibly diverse and interesting food scene. There is also the fact that they have some of the finest wine-growing regions in the world, and an abundance of great local produce. Yep, dining in Australia is a treat for the senses, and I'm about to take you on a culinary journey. Whether you’re living it up in <a href="http://www.manorapartments.com.au/">Brisbane apartments</a> and Sydney hotels or camping under the stars with some bush tucker at Uluru, the food and wine of this country will seduce you as much as the beaches and wide open spaces.<br />

Bush Tucker is the name given to food found in the bush and created using traditional Australian Aboriginal techniques. The Australian Indigenous people are the rightful owners of the land, and bush tucker is one of the traditions that has remained, even throughout colonization. It involves grinding grains to make bread, finding berries and grubs (eek!) that can serve as a good source of protein and understanding where you can<br />
find food and water. Bush tucker is a learning experience about the way indigenous people used to live as much as it is a way of eating, so the best way to experience it is with an Indigenous guide in the outback somewhere.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Asian Pad Thai</td></tr>

Australia has a massive Asian population, due in part to rigorous immigration after both world wars and also to its proximity to Asia. As a result, they’re lucky enough to experience some of the finest Asian cuisine on earth, something that combines ancient techniques with high quality local ingredients to (dare I say it?) improve on perfection. Chinatown in Sydney is a great hub of all things Asian, and a meal there will not only prove delicious, but inexpensive, too!<br />

Australian climate, along with the influx Australia saw of Mediterranean immigration after WW2 means that Mediterranean palates have influenced a large portion of the Australian diet. Italian, Greek, Maltese and Lebanese immigration meant that Aussies started getting a lot more garlic and a lot more taste on their forks, and once they tried it, they never went back. Try Maltese Pastizzis, Greek Yiros, Lebanese Pides and<br />
Italian Cannoli.<br />

When it comes to Aussie wine everyone knows they’ve got the formula pretty much down pat. The Barossa Valley in South Australia, the Hunter Valley in NSW and the Margaret River region in Western Australia make up a triangle of superb wine, each region having its own specialty. If you want heavy, rich reds with a healthy dose of flavour then the Barossa Valley can’t be beaten. For unique and delicious Semillon the Hunter Valley is the place to go and if you’re looking for a Sauvignon Blanc, head straight for the Margaret River region.<br />

<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1_yq-yDGwlQ/TngQz3vpCuI/AAAAAAAAAlQ/y4iW3-zEOOo/s1600/G-O-Road-Oz.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1_yq-yDGwlQ/TngQz3vpCuI/AAAAAAAAAlQ/y4iW3-zEOOo/s400/G-O-Road-Oz.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Lookout point along the drive</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
1. <b>Consider the Great Ocean Road tours available</b><br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.grayline.com.au/australia-sightseeing/melbourne-day-tours/great-ocean-road-day-tours/great-ocean-road-adventure-tour/">Great Ocean Road tours</a> take the hassle out of organising the drive. These tours are offered by a variety of companies, range from 1 to 4 days, and cater for all budgets. By signing up, you can simply hop on the tour, sit back and enjoy the ride.<br />
<br />
Great Ocean Road tours are a great option if you’re looking for something organised and easy. Not only will you be on a guided tour that stops at all the significant landmarks, you have the opportunity to meet and engage with other like-minded travelers from all over the globe. Most tours also include meals, accommodation and national park fees.<br />
<br />
Great Ocean Road tours also often come as part of a package. For example, along with the Great Ocean Road tour, you can also do Phillip Island tours, Adelaide tours, or <a href="http://www.grayline.com.au/australia-sightseeing/melbourne-day-tours/">Melbourne tours</a>. This means that you have the option to see more whilst in the area!<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mwbEmELo9V8/TngSPqAAwzI/AAAAAAAAAlY/oXKdqDi7LkI/s1600/hopetoun+falls-OtwayNatPark.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mwbEmELo9V8/TngSPqAAwzI/AAAAAAAAAlY/oXKdqDi7LkI/s400/hopetoun+falls-OtwayNatPark.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Hopetoun Falls, Otway National Park</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
2. <b>Take your time</b><br />
<br />
The drive is 243kms long, and can be driven in 3.5hours. However, do you want to rush the Great Ocean Road experience? Don’t you want to take in the scenic beauty that you’ll pass? Don’t you want to get out, stretch your legs and smell the fresh air?<br />
<br />
Also, don’t forget that the road is not straight. There are a lot of inclines and windy, narrow sections. This means that you’ll need to be cautious if you decide to drive yourself.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Qi8ELq3BBP4/TngS1QxDKxI/AAAAAAAAAlc/BXDKMetS9Q8/s1600/GOR3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="267" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Qi8ELq3BBP4/TngS1QxDKxI/AAAAAAAAAlc/BXDKMetS9Q8/s400/GOR3.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Great Ocean Road</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
3. <b>Make sure you’re prepared</b><br />
<br />
If you’re driving, get your car serviced before starting out. The last thing you want is for your car to break down on one of the quiet sections of the drive. So make sure that your car is in good condition and is capable of doing the drive.<br />
<br />
Next, make sure that your car has the adequate supplies. You should start out with a full tank of petrol, and pack non-perishable food, plenty of water (especially if travelling during the summer), blankets, first aid kit, torch, sunscreen etc.<br />
<br />
4. <b>Book accommodation early</b><br />
<br />
As the Great Ocean Road drive is very popular, book your accommodation well in advance. The peak season is the summer school holidays of December & January, when a lot of families do the drive. As such, either book in advance, or hold off travelling til after the peak season.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Twelve Apostles, Great Ocean Road</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
5. <b>Do your research</b><br />
<br />
Make sure that you know the history of the road, so that you can fully experience it. Read up on the construction of the road, its function as a memorial to fallen soldiers and the notable landmarks along the way. This way you’ll know what to look out for and won’t risk missing something important. Here's a hint: You don't want to miss out on seeing the Twelve Apostles.<br />
<br />
Now go enjoy your Great Ocean Road adventure!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04560230864623101588noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2755461055155628012.post-82824962670986506342011-09-15T21:06:00.000-04:002012-01-12T18:44:01.315-05:004 Foods To Try In Southeast Asia<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

Southeast Asia is one of the most exciting destinations you can travel to - delight your senses and make sure you try the following foods while you’re there!<br />
<br />
Travelling through Southeast Asia is a treat for the senses. Not only can you experience incredible scenery, cultures and history, but also you can immerse yourself in a completely different world. In a blur of <a href="http://www.swiss-belhotel.com/vietnam/hoi-an/hoian#hotel+information">Vietnam hotels</a>, Thai elephant tours and trips into the jungle in Myanmar, one thing that will stay with you long after you leave is the memory of the delectable food you’ll be able to try while you’re there. Just so you don’t miss out, I’ve taken the liberty of listing the top four foods you absolutely HAVE to try in Southeast Asia. Bon Apetit!<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<b>Pad Thai</b><br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-m6btH5qMd78/TnKd22K3snI/AAAAAAAAAi0/7tQ7l22mqhg/s1600/pad+thai.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-m6btH5qMd78/TnKd22K3snI/AAAAAAAAAi0/7tQ7l22mqhg/s400/pad+thai.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Pad Thai (Photo: Robyn Lee)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
If your only experience of the tantalizingly delicious world of Pad Thai comes in a plastic container from your local takeaway, you’re in for a treat. Watch as street vendors whip up the best, most fragrant, spicy and delicate noodle dish right in front of your eyes, and you’ll never come back to your local Thai restaurant again. The trick is the way they crack the egg in the wok to coat the noodles…perfection!<br />
<br />
<b>Phô</b><br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6lKvSWUgM_E/TnKePVjUwOI/AAAAAAAAAi4/R8Wbagd0DhA/s1600/Pho.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6lKvSWUgM_E/TnKePVjUwOI/AAAAAAAAAi4/R8Wbagd0DhA/s400/Pho.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Pho</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Phô is the national dish of Vietnam and consists of rice-noodles in a clear, fragrant broth. The soup has thinly-sliced pieces of meat of vegetables depending on taste, which are cooked by the heat of the soup. Usually it is flavoured by Vietnamese basil, chili and bean sprouts to taste, and it is one of the freshest, most flavourful things you can taste—perfect after a long day of sightseeing!<br />
<br />
<b>Chili Mud Crab</b><br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Gg6JnXhJnAI/TnKegt_nuEI/AAAAAAAAAi8/F4eKDvQT-cI/s1600/Chilli-Mud-Crab.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="245" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Gg6JnXhJnAI/TnKegt_nuEI/AAAAAAAAAi8/F4eKDvQT-cI/s400/Chilli-Mud-Crab.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Chili Mud Crab</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
This famous Singaporean dish is famous the world over, but there is no better place to taste it than in the city of its origin. A mud crab is usually quartered, doused in herbs and a healthy amount of chili (remember to ask for a mild version if you’re not good with spicy things—the Singaporeans like theirs HOT) and simmered until the meat inside is fragrant and silky. It is usually served with generous helpings of crusty bread for dipping up the remaining sauce. Have it with an ice-cold beer to take some of the spice away. Delicious!
<br />
<br />
<b>Durian</b><br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-07YXifthqlo/TnKfIEHJ0VI/AAAAAAAAAjA/3Y1sCkjhf24/s1600/durian.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="265" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-07YXifthqlo/TnKfIEHJ0VI/AAAAAAAAAjA/3Y1sCkjhf24/s400/durian.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Durian fruit (photo: flickr user Wenzday01)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
This Malaysian fruit is quite the conundrum. Its smell has been described as having the aroma of dirty feet, gasoline, death and manure, among other things, but the sweet fruit inside is so good that people brave the stench each day to get into the middle of it. It’s perplexing to the human physiology to eat something that smells so vile and yet tastes so good, but trust me—if you block your nose for the first part (or better yet, have someone else peel it for you) the fruit is worth the pain. Many <a href="http://www.swiss-belhotel.com/indonesia/bali/patmase#hotel+information">hotels in Malaysia</a> make an irresistible cocktail from the fruit of the Durian, which is well worth a taste and comes with the added bonus of you not having to smell the skin!<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Sculptures in the Grand Palace, Bangkok Thailand</td></tr>

Grand is an understatement when describing this incredibly opulent palace. Built in the 18th century as the residence for King Rama I of Thailand, the palace is actually a complex of buildings including a long line of expansions (those Thai kings do love to renovate!). Featuring a mix of traditional Thai and European architecture, the Palace can be seen for miles and forms one of the major tourist attractions for visitors to Bangkok.<br />
<br />
<b>Angkor Wat, Cambodia</b><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Angkor Wat, Cambodia</td></tr>

Built in the 12th Century for King Suryavaman as his home and capital city, this temple complex is Cambodia’s most famous landmark, and draws hundreds of thousands of tourists each year. The temple itself is one of the primary examples of Khmer architecture in the world, and also holds the title of the largest religious building on earth. Impressive, no?<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Jalan Tokong, Malaysia</td></tr>

Rather than one landmark in particular, this street in the heart of Melaka in Malaysia, is a tourist attraction as a whole. Side by side the street features a Chinese temple, a Malay Mosque and a Hindu temple, which not only give us a glimpse of how the world’s religions should live in harmony, but also offers insights into the way the culture and religion of Malaysia was established.<br />
<br />
<b>Mother Temple of Besakih</b><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Mother Temple of Besakih, Bali</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Rising from the hills of Mount Agung in Bali, the Mother Temple of Besakih is the largest Hindu temple in Bali. Its history dates back to the fourteenth century, and there are at least SEVENTY festivals and holy celebrations held at this massive temple complex each year. The temple is incredibly important to Bali’s Hindu population, and attracts a lot of tourism both for its historical significance and its picturesque setting.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Interior of Cao Dai Holy See Temple, Vietnam</td></tr>

Located in southern Vietnam not far from the Cu Chi tunnel, the name Cao Dai literally translates into ‘high place’, or the highest place that God reigns. Cao Dai is a Vietnamese religion that takes bits and pieces from all other religions, including science, and encompasses a spirit of inclusion of all faiths. The temple itself was built in 1933, and has an intriguingly colorful and joyful exterior.<br />
